Lotto 649

What is Canada’s most popular lottery game ever? If you answered Lotto 649, the pan Canada lottery, then you’d be correct. Unlike most other Canadian lottery games, which are run by local lottery commissions and regulated by the ILC (Interprovincial Lottery Corporation), Lotto 649 is actually run by the ILC.

The ILC was created backed in 1976 to govern all Canadian lottery games and includes representation from all five Canadian lottery commissions, including the BC Lottery, Atlantic Lottery Corporation, Ontario Lottery, Lotto Quebec and the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

Lotto 649 is the only game run by the ILC and it has been offered consistently since 1982, when the very first jackpot of $500,000 Canadian was offered. Today, the Lotto 649 game is the most popular in Canada and starts out with a $3.5 million jackpot (prizes do roll over when no one wins though, meaning that the payouts can be quite generous).

Game Type

Offered every Wednesday and Saturday, Lotto 649 is a traditional style lotto game, offering the chance to win it all by picking just six numbers out of 49 options. There is no requirement as with American multi state lottery games to pick a second number from a second drawing (ala the Power Ball) however there is a bonus 7th number drawn each time the drawing is held which offers additional chances to win cash prizes.

The game also offers you the chance to win additional cash prizes for picking five numbers and the bonus number, five numbers, four numbers or even just three numbers (there is also a bonus option to pick two main numbers plus the bonus number) meaning that you have lots of chances to win big money in the Lotto 649 game.

As with most Canadian lottery games, the Lotto 649 game was initially offered only to Canadian citizens who went to a lottery kiosk and purchased a ticket. However, since the game became so popular, it is now being offered to anyone with an Internet connection who wishes to participate and to become a lotto millionaire. The only legal requirement is that you must be over 18 years of age to participate, so if you’re not, you’d better ask your parents to buy the ticket for you.

Odds of Winning

The odds of winning the Lotto 649 jackpot are actually quite good compared to the two big American multi state games (Mega Millions and Power Ball). Your chances of taking it all home in the jackpot are just one in 13,980,000. Second prize offers odds of one in 2,330,000 while third prize odds are one in 55,490 and fourth prize odds are one in 1,033. Fifth prize winners have odds of winning of one in 57.

There is also a bonus sixth prize, which requires getting two numbers plus the bonus number and the odds of winning that prize in the Lotto 649 game are just one in 81. Over all, not too shabby for jackpots which can be very attractive (the largest Lotto 649 jackpot ever was over $25 million Canadian offered in 2004).
