Powerball Lotto
The Australian Powerball Lottery is the a famous lottery game which was created by the Tatersalls Lottery Company. The Tatersalls Company, which was created in 1895 is the original Australian lottery commission. Even today, all Australia lotteries are operated by state in cooperation with Tatersalls, though there are a number of regional lottery games offered by others.
The Australian Powerball game, which inspired the American game of the same name, is Australia’s second most popular national lottery game, after the Oz Lottery and was created in 1996 as an alternative to that game.
Game Type
Like many modern lottery games and indeed like the American Powerball game which is based on it, the Australian Powerball Lotto game features a doubled approach to picking the correct numbers. In this case, that means that you pick 5 numbers out of a pool of 45 possible choices and then you pick a secondary “power ball” out of a second batch of 45 numbers. By matching both the first 5 numbers and the secondary power ball, you can win the jackpot.
Secondary Prizes
Like the American Powerball game, there are secondary prizes offered as well, with 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th place winners collecting cash payments for having hit all five primary numbers, 4 primary numbers and the power ball, three primary numbers and the power ball, three primary numbers or two primary numbers and the power ball respectively.
How to Play
You can play the game either by choosing your own numbers or using the computer based “SlikPik approach, which will pick numbers automatically for you from the computer. Tickets are available at kiosks throughout Australia as well as via numerous online outlets which offer lottery games from all over the world. There is no need to be present to win or even collect the money if you win. The only restriction is that you must be at least 16 years of age in some provinces and 18 years of age in others (local laws where you live may have different requirements).
Odds of Winning
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 54,970,000. For the second prize, the odds of winning are 1 in 1,240,000, the third prize odds are 1 in 274,896. Fourth prize odds are 1 in 6,248 and the fifth prize level odds are 1 in 7,048. The odds of winning the sixth prize are 1 in 160 and the odds of winning the seventh prize are 1 in 556. The record jackpot won in the Powerball lottery was AU$58,700,000.
